The Different Types Of Retainers

Finishing your journey to a perfect smile is a big step, but what is next? Chances are good that you would like to keep your teeth looking great well past the initial treatment. You have most likely heard of retainers at this point. But did you know there are multiple types of retainers? The two most common types of orthodontic retainers are broken into two basic categories removable retainers, and permanent retainers. Each type has its own set of pros and cons, and many people select their preferences based on their lifestyle. It is important to talk with your orthodontist about options for retainers after your final corrective phase is complete. Here is some information that can help you ask the right questions!

What are Permanent Retainers?

Don’t be confused with the name of this type of retainer. As we all know nothing is permanent and these are in fact removable to some degree. This type of retainer is also known as a bonded retainer. It is typically placed on the front six teeth on either the lower, upper, or both sets of teeth. Permanent retainers typically consist of a metal wire attached to the proximal side of the teeth near the gum. This wire is essentially glued to your teeth using a special bond to make them “permanent”. Since a new structure is essentially being added to your teeth, your orthodontist will work with you to ensure that your bite remains unaffected. They will also work with you to make sure that the attached structure is comfortable as well.

Permanent retainers are a great option for people who:

  • Are likely to have a lot of shifting in the front teeth.
  • Don’t need as much relapse protection in the rear teeth.
  • Are careful about what they eat to avoid breaking the retainer.
  • Don’t want to worry about remembering to carry their removable retainer.
  • Are willing to clean and floss regularly to keep the retainer clean.

What are removable retainers?

Removable retainers function exactly as the name suggests. They can be taken out throughout the day for tasks like eating or exercising. They are typically made using a mold or rendering of your current smile structure to make sure they fit comfortably and effectively. Removable retainers are also clear, giving the impression that they are nearly invisible.

Like permanent retainers, removable retainers also need to be cleaned. Since they are removable, the process is a little different. Cleaning these often involves brushing the retainer directly or soaking them in water with a cleaning compound. This effectively cleans the buildup associated with common daily activities. However, it is important to note that removable retainers do stain and break down over time. This means that you can expect to go through multiple removable retainers in a lifetime.

Removable retainers would be suitable for people who:

  • Don’t mind the hassle of keeping track of a retainer
  • Want a more flexible retainer solution
  • Are willing to maintain a removable retainer.

Testimonials

“I’m 28 and getting braces was something I struggled with since elementary. I had the horrible experience of being teased at because of my teeth. So I felt uncomfortable smiling. I hate taking pictures showing my teeth, so I frowned all the time. Even laughing was uncomfortable. I finally decided to take the step to do something about it. I found Beth’s Braces on Groupon and decided to give it a shot. I didn’t think I would afford it but I went anyway and found out how awesome she is and her team as well. They made me feel at home, and beautiful too. I would recommend her and her team to anyone. I’m a brace face and I am so proud of it!! I smile more with these braces than I have in all my life. Thank you Beth!! Thank you helping me through this journey.”
